SEd Alumni Highlight: Dr Sharon Joy Bulalang

This week, AdZU School of Education (SEd) shines the spotlight on our very own, Dr Sharon Joy Bulalang.

Dr Bulalang is a 2002 Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) graduate who has made waves in the fields of education and linguistics.

She worked her way through college as an academic scholar of the William Hall and Lee Hall Scholarship for College Subanon Students. After graduation, she went on to teach at the AdZU Grade School.

Knowing that she must go where she is most needed, she returned to her hometown to teach in a remote area in Sibuco, for three years.

She pursued her graduate diploma course in Applied Linguistics at the Alliance Graduate School with the goal of translating the Bible in Subanon, her native language. She then gracefully marched as Cum Laude. In  2012, she became a Presidential Scholar at the University of the Philippines – Diliman, where she finished her Master of Arts in Language Education and received an Academic Excellence Award.

She then went on to earn her master’s in linguistics and PhD in linguistics at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa as a full scholar.

Among her distinctions is the National Science Foundation Award for her project, “Syntactic Description of Language with Unique Patterns of Symmetrical Voice Alternations.” She later received the “Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Research Award in the Founder Region Fellowship, Soroptimist International, California USA, on May 1, 2020, and the “Excellence in Doctoral Dissertation Research Award by the Collge of Language, linguistics, and literature of University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The School of Education and the entire Ateneo de Zamboanga University community are proud of you, Dr Bulalang, for giving out your wholehearted service in teaching children and manifesting excellence in the field of academics and research.

Fly higher, Azul Aguila!
